Mussolini was known to authorities as controversial and causing political violence against opponents. Alessandro was ill- tempered, which lead to the police warning Mussolini to cease threats towards his opponents or it would lead to the destruction of his property. Shorty after, in 1878, he was arrested due to the suspicion that Mussolini was taking part in revolutionary acts, hence his order to be under house arrest. He was released in 1882 so that he could marry his long time girlfriend Rosa Maltoni.
