As soon as Benito Mussolini was able to, he helped his father in the forge. Working with his father side by side, he learnt lots, especially regarding Italian politics and how wealth should shared in Italy. As Benito's father was a socialist and a republican, he believed strongly that the people of Italy should be able to choose who leads them; the monarchy should be scratched. Many people followed the same views as Mussolini's father, therefore it made sense for Benito, to be onboard with what his father said.
Benito's father, Alessandro was a firm believer that all Italians should live under Italian Rule, however some Italians lived under the rule of Austria. In this sense, Alessandro was a nationalist. Benito grew up around socialism, republicanism and nationalism. He grew up with the understanding that the Roman Catholic Church was an enemy of Italy, as it did not support the country itself.
Benito Mussolini's first school did not do him any good, as it was run by Catholic monks, Benito rebelled, which lead to his expulsion later on. He did better at his other schools and later went on to become a teacher as he had a strong interest in politics but not in teaching.
In June 1902, Mussolini travelled to Switzerland where he had to live rough since he had no obvious skills. He got involved with some Italian socialists, which lead to him been hired as a bricklayer and joining the trade union. He got expelled from Switzerland in 1903 when he suggested a general strike.
He went to France but returned to Italy to do his military service. He moved to the north of Italy where the Austrians ruled it. The authorities later marked him down as a troublemaker as he encouraged trade unions and attacked the Catholic Church. He was forced out of Trentino ( North of Italy ) in 1909.
